Etching & dull spots
Rings where glasses sat, cloudy patches, a top that went flat. None of it is dirt, and none of it cleans off.

There's a dull ring where a glass sat. What is it?
An etch. Something acidic in the glass, or condensation carrying it, took the polish off the surface in a ring. It has no color, won't wipe off, and feels slightly different under a fingertip. Nothing was added, so nothing cleans out. The surface is rebuilt mechanically.

On marble, that's etching from what's in the sink: citrus, soap with acid, vinegar rinses. On granite it's usually hard-water film, which wipes off. Marble: re-polish. Granite: stone-safe cleaner and a dry buff, then start drying the sink zone.

The area under my coffee maker is dull.
Drips. Coffee is acidic, and daily drips on marble add up to one dull patch. On granite, the same drips leave a film that strips off. Put the machine on a tray or a board and wipe under it weekly.

My whole countertop went flat and hazy, not just a spot.
Either an acidic cleaner used for months on marble, which etches the entire surface a little at a time, or product buildup and wear on granite. The first is the whole top re-honed and re-polished. The second is stripped, then re-polished where the finish itself is worn. Send a photo in low, angled light.

A lemon slice left a dull mark on my counter.
That's marble, or a marble-family stone sold as quartzite, reacting to acid. It's an etch, and it happened in the seconds the lemon was down. Re-polished mechanically. If you were told the stone was quartzite, this is the answer to whether it really is.

I cleaned a dull spot with vinegar and it got bigger.
Vinegar is acid, and the dull spot was an etch. You etched around it. Stop using anything acidic on that counter, and send a photo. The whole area gets re-polished; the sooner, the smaller the job.

Toothpaste left dull spots on my marble vanity.
Those are etches. Many toothpastes are mildly abrasive and some are acidic, and dried blobs on polished marble leave small dull marks. They're re-polished. Rinse the vanity every night; whitening pastes are the worst offenders.

Mouthwash spilled on my bathroom counter and left a mark.
On marble, that's an etch and sometimes a light stain; mouthwash is acidic and dyed. On granite or quartz, it wipes off. Rinse immediately, the etch happens in seconds, and keep the bottle on a tray.

Does honed marble etch?
Yes, exactly like polished; the acid reaction is identical. Honed is a matte finish, so etches show far less, and a honed top etched all over looks blotchy in angled light rather than ringed. It's brought back by re-honing evenly.
My quartzite etched. I thought it couldn't.
True quartzite can't. A lot of stone sold as quartzite is a marble-family stone with the same look, and it etches like marble. If yours etched, that's what you have. The fix is the same as marble: re-polished mechanically. We test before we touch it.

Is a water ring on marble a stain?
Water doesn't stain marble. A dull ring where a glass sat is the acid in what was in the glass, or the mineral film the water left when it dried. One is an etch; the other wipes off. If it wipes off, it wasn't an etch. If it doesn't, it is.

Will sealing stop my marble from etching?
No. Sealer goes into the pores and slows down what soaks in. Etching happens on the surface, on contact, and sealer isn't there. Sealed marble reacts to a lemon exactly like unsealed marble. Seal for stains. Use coasters for etches.
Can I polish an etch out myself?
Not with anything from the store. Store polishes are waxes and toppers; they sit on the etch and shine until they wear off. Etch-remover powders are fine abrasives that, in the wrong hands, leave a patch with a different sheen than the rest of the top, which is harder to blend than the etch was. It's a mechanical job.

Will an etch spread if I leave it?
No. An etch is a fixed spot where polish was removed, and it doesn't grow on its own. What grows is the count, and the count decides whether it's a spot job or the whole top. Living with one ring is a fair choice.
